Heart Pacemaker Surgery

The California Center for Cardiothoracic Surgery specialize in surgeries involving the heart and chest, including heart pacemaker surgery. Heart pacemaker surgery is a procedure performed on patients who are experiencing irregular heart beats. The heart possesses its own natural electrical system that sends signals to the heart to beat, controlling the flow of blood to the rest of the body. When the body's own electrical system is not working properly, the heart beats irregularly or can even stop for a period of time. This is a very dangerous condition that often requires heart pacemaker surgery, which essentially provides the body with a reliable backup electrical system to regulate the heart's function when it is not working optimally. Today, heart pacemaker surgery is not as complicated and risky as it once was thanks to modern technology and surgical advancement. The talented surgical team at the California Center for Cardiothoracic Surgery has successfully performed thousands of heart pacemaker surgeries for Los Angeles patients.

The heart pacemaker surgery involves two parts. First, the electrical leads that send signals to the pacemaker are inserted using a vein, and then the heart pacemaker unit is placed in a small pocket created by the surgeon. The heart pacemaker surgery can take as little as an hour, and patients can return home the same day following their pacemaker procedure. After surgery, the heart pacemaker is usually dormant within the chest, unless the heart begins to beat irregularly. The electrical leads, which monitor the inner chambers of the heart, will pick up on the irregularity and will signal the pacemaker to take over regulating the heartbeat until it resumes normal function.

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Hearing that you need a coronary artery bypass surgery can be a frightening experience. However, with the right doctors and a top notch cardiothoracic center, coronary artery bypass surgery can be a positive experience that improves a person's quality of life. Most patients who require coronary artery bypass surgery are suffering from a buildup of plaque in the coronary arteries that impedes the blood flow from the heart. The diminished blood flow can cause symptoms such as chest pains, a winded feeling while participating in cardio intensive activities, and a tight feeling around the heart. Many patients who require coronary artery bypass surgery actually do not notice the symptoms at all, and only find out the extent of arterial blockage from their cardiothoracic physicians.

Most often, patients who need coronary artery bypass surgery have a genetic predisposition to hardened or blocked arteries. This predisposition can either be aided or intensified by the person's lifestyle including their activity levels and their diet. A diet high in saturated fats and sugars can increase the chance of requiring coronary artery bypass surgery, since unhealthy fats can harden arteries. The good news is that, with modern technology and skilled cardiothoracic surgeons, coronary artery bypass surgery is usually a successful procedure. Southern California patients in need of coronary artery bypass surgery should always seek out a well qualified clinic with an esteemed reputation, such as the California Center for Cardiothoracic Surgery. The Center is run by principals Dr. Mohammed A. Gharavi and Dr. Gholam R. Mohammedzadeh, both talented cardiothoracic surgeons who have affiliations with top local hospitals.
